BAPTO 2010 Tournament Report

Famously Britain's longest standing national amateur pub pool team event, BAPTO paid £11,000 in cash prizes at this years finals. Their 34th annual event moved forward to the weekend of the 10th September to enjoy some finer weather for the first time in many years. Historically held in the wintery month of November, players warmly welcomed the decision to move the BAPTO finals to late summer! The event ran smoothly taking pleasure in its second year at Lyons Robin Hood Holiday Park and their new £500k refurbishment of the main arena. Players were very impressed by the re-vamped arena, with many positive comments about the reinstated prestige feel of the competition and the tournaments great atmosphere. A high standard of play was encouraged by BAPTO's first-rate playing conditions, presented by 32 SAM tables immaculately covered in Hainsworth Match tournament cloth and completed with Aramith's finest pool balls. For the first time in many years, team numbers were slightly down from the previous years, thought mainly due to the date change and current economic climate. However, entries for the ladies singles and the charity mixed doubles were up by 40%, showing a real increase in the numbers of ladies attending.

BAPTO Smaller Good Cause Appeal raised £1100 for the two nominated food causes; £550 to go to Airedale Hospital Chemo Therapy Day Unit to help refurbish the ward and £550 for the Duke of Cornwall Hospital Spinal Unit for new equipment. Money was raised through a popular 14:1 charity table, mixed doubles charity trophy and a raffle.
